My home state of Florida is under major threat from massive Hurricane Irma, which is probably one of the strongest storms in the Caribbean basin. I will be in my condo building by the beach hunkering the storm and should the winds get too strong, the stairwell will be my refuge for a few hours. Having grown up in the Philippines, I’ve had my fill of hurricanes or typhoons as we call it on that side of the planet. However, Hurricane Irma will be my first Category 5 so I’m bracing myself for some crazy and scary experience.
Since I am in the middle of a hurricane experience, I reckon the photo above is the most appropriate to post today. This photo was taken a month ago at the beach area of the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort and Spa where I was lounging at the poolside to take advantage of my club membership. I saw these ominous looking clouds rolling from the west and hurriedly pulled out my iPhone 7 Plus to capture as many photos as I can. I actually submitted this photo to The Weather Channel’s It’s Amazing Out There Photo Contest and I hope it gets recognized. Announcement of winners is on Monday, September 11, 2017 while I’m hunkering from the wrath of Irma. I sure do hope that by the time the storm passes, good news will be waiting for me from The Weather Channel.
I hope you and your family and friends are OK!

We experienced, and survived, Irma. We live in north central Fl approximately 85 miles northwest of Orlando. 72 hours without power but no major structural damage.

Glad to know everything is okay. I was about to evacuate to friends in Leesburg but decided to stay at the last minute. My friends ended up evacuating as well. Thankfully it’s over now….although the season isn’t over yet. 😬

That is a very cool shot. I do hope you weathered the storm without incident. We evacuated and thankfully our little home was still standing when we returned.

Hope the worst of it passed you by. I have a nephew in Punta Gorda who was forced to evacuate. Scary stuff.

Thankfully I survived the storm in one piece! Thanks to hurricane impact windows I felt safe inside my apartment. It was quite scary watching the storm from my window.

Hope all is well with you after the storm. I was very lucky my building never lost power throughout the storm. Glad Fort Lauderdale didn’t get hit directly.

Yikes. I’m nervous for you in a stairwell. Clutch that camera close. And the zoom lens.

Thanks. I didn’t have to go into the stairwell. Winds were very strong but the impact windows kept me safe inside. Had we gotten hit directly it would have been a different story.

Thank you! Fortunately we didn’t get hit directly. We had winds strong enough to cause damages in around our building but I stayed inside my apartment the whole time.
